Kalimpong the “city of flowers” a small hill station nestled in the laps of the eastern Himalayan ranges in the Indian state of West Bengal. The town is tucked at an elevation of about 1,250 meters surrounded by enchanting valleys and lush green landscapes.
Kalimpong hill station is also known for its educational institution, most of which was established during the British era. The town offers the pristine nature with so many commercial plants like orchids, cactus, Rhododendrons, Gladiolus and more. There are so many nurseries in Kalimpong in which visitors can witness the rare and exotic collection of cactus, orchids etc. The town is also known as the’ city of flowers” due to its wide collection of flowers.
Kalimpong is used to be the main gateway in the trade between the Tibet and India and after China annexation, to Tibet, the route was closed. The history said that until the 19 the century the Kalimpong was ruled by the Bhutan King and after the Anglo- Bhutan War 1864, the “treaty of Sinchula” was signed, where Bhutan has the eastern part of Teesta which was captured by East India Company (British) and that time Kalimpong was a small hamlet. Then after Independence, the Kalimpong has been merged with Indian State West Bengal.

Lepcha Museum and Zang Dong Palri are the cultural places of Kalimpong preserving the cultures of the Kalimpong hill station from many decades.
The most popular snack in Kalimpong is “momo” which is made up of beef, chicken or vegetables, flour, and a steamed dumpling. To reach Kalimpong the nearest railway station is NJP (New Jalpaiguri) 77 km and Siliguri junction (68km) and from there you can get a cab or you can hire a cab.
How to reach Kalimpong by the airport?
Bagdogra is the nearest airport, which is about (80 km) away from Kalimpong. You can get enough taxi from the airport and the trip takes 3.5 hours watching amazing views from the car.

The major co-educational institution nestled on the lower steep slope of Deolo Hill which lies 5km from Kalimpong main town. The institution was founded in the 1900s by Sir Anderson Graham, who worked and settled so many years in Kalimpong. The institution is accompanied by a huge playground, spacious classrooms, laboratories, a music room, computer room, library, and auditorium. The School is a small town itself which have its own Cottages, Farmhouse, Workshop, Hospital, Bakery, Dairy, Poultry etc. The institution is an international School and gets sponsored by any non- governmental association from throughout the world.
Deolo Hill is one of the two hills in between the Kalimpong town and another is Durpin Hill. Deolo hill is known for it’s an amazing height of about 2,000 meters above sea level. The hill is the 10km distance from the town and the hill is accompanied by three water reservoirs, where two has the main role in supply water to the town. The hill offers mesmerizing sunrise over the Kanchenjunga snow peaks, Village of Teesta and the view of Kalimpong town. The hill is dotted with the attractive park in the summit of the hill, lodge runs by the government and several restaurants at the entrance.
Hanuman Temple is the famous Hindu temple situated near Deolo Hill and 8km distance from the Kalimpong town. The Temple is dedicated TO Lord Hanuman where a giant statue of Lord Hanuman is perched at the top of the hill smaller than Deolo Hill. The hill offers the views of villages on one side and rolling hills on the other side. To reach the Temple one has to climb several steps and at the entrance, a small Durga Temple is dotted. You can also visit the Buddha Park which lies close to the Hanuman Temple.
Kalimpong Science Center
The Kalimpong Science center is a science and Technology center, settled close to Deolo Hill and lies at a distance of about 1km from Deolo Hill and 9km from Kalimpong main town. The Science center was established in 2008 and the main motive to build is to give awareness of scientific knowledge and spreads ideas to the students. Science center offers 3d movie theater, science observatory, and several scientific displays and there are several outdoor activities. From Kalimpong science center, you can discover the picturesque views of Kanchenjunga snow-capped mountains.
Thongsa Gumpa is the Buddhist monastery and the oldest monastery in whole Kalimpong. Thongsa or Tongsa Gumpa is known by the name “Bhutanese Monastery and situated about 1.5 km distance from Kalimpong main town. The monastery is the major tourist attraction in Kalimpong and “Buddha Purnima” is the prominent festival celebrates at the Gumpa and attracts a large number of tourist during these festivals.
Mangal Dham is the major Hindu Temple, situated at a distance of about 1 km from Kalimpong main town. It was built in 1993 by Shri Krishna Pranami in the memory of late Guru Shri Mangaldasji and one of the importances Hindu Temple in Kalimpong. The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna and many painting attached to the wall of the temple. The temple sprawling an area about 2 acres and also dotted with amazing garden with fragrance flowers. Krishna austami is the major festival grandly celebrates in this temple with different colors.
Durpin Monastery is the major Buddhist Monastery in Kalimpong, tucked in the Durpin hill which is about 5 km away from Kalimpong main stand. Durpin monastery or Zang Dong Palri was established in 1970 by Dudjum Rinpoche and after 6 years Dalai Lama consecrated this monastery. The monastery has a typical architecture, sculptured pillars, and walls, ancient painting which is the charm of the monastery. The monastery is now becoming the prominent religious center for Buddhism. From the terrace of this monastery, one can watch the alluring view of Kanchenjunga and magnificent view of River Teesta.
Pine View Nursery
It is one of the popular monasteries, mainly known for its rare and exotic collection of cactus and situated at a distance of about 2.5 km away from Kalimpong town. Sprawling an area about 2 acres, the nursery is the home of more than 1,400 species of cacti and the nursery received so many National and International awards for breeding so many cacti in a particular place. The Nursery is placed in such a great location from where one can discover scenic views and more.
Lava and Lolegaon
Lava and Lolegaon is one of the places where one can enjoy the pristine nature. Basically, lava and Lolegaon is the small hamlet villages situated 30 and 31 km distance from Kalimpong bus stand offers the finest destination for tourism. The lava is located at an elevation of about 7,200 feet above the main sea level and lava is situated at atop the flat hill with an elevation of about 5,500 feet respectively. In lava, one can visit is Neora Valley National Park, Lava Monastery, Lava View Point and more. In Lolegaon, one can visit the Changey la Falls, Canopy walk, Tiffindara for sunset and more.
