Hello and welcome to my new travel blog and today I am going to presents you some important information of untouched hill station Kalimpong and the outstanding places that I have recently visited.
I hope most of the people are much unknown to the Kalimpong hill station, for me the place is best to discover the pristine nature, chirping birds, undulating hills and habitation of rare and exotic wild animals, which is the paradise for nature and adventure seeker.
So, how this place looks like let me give a picture of the hill station.
So, above image is the panoramic view of Kalimpong hill station surrounding by rolling valleys and immaculate nature. Kalimpong holding the title” hidden gems” and yes the place was hidden in the foothills of the eastern Himalayas, lies in the Indian State of West Bengal.
The town is residing at the height of about 1,350 meters above sea level and offers numerous tourists places, attractions, adventure activities around Kalimpong. When you are familiar with the place you will change your mind than a plan to stay longer in Kalimpong. The jaw-dropping view of Kanchenjunga snow-capped mountains is the major attraction of the town.
For me, the most interesting part of Kalimpong is their rich and diverse culture which truly gives you the treasure of happiness and the people of this hill station is so friendly and helpful.
Culture is the main backbone of all the community and it is rituals of the ancestor of that particular place. So, in Kalimpong due to the settlement of various castes and creed peoples the town has mixed culture and tradition which is the main clue that makes the hill station unique from other tourists place. They equally celebrate all the festivals like Diwali ,Dasai, Christmas, Losar, Holi etc with joy and great courtesy.
Kalimpong, you will see the settlement of Nepali peoples in great ratio. The history tells us that the Lepchas was the original tribes of the town later people started migrating from one place to another. The people of this hill station are a kind-hearted, friendly and welcome guest with warm hospitality and authentic cuisines.
The Kalimpong hill station is the retreat for the foodies, momo is the most popular and dominated snack food of the town. There are other cuisines which make the town famous like Churpi, Noodle or Thukpa, Aloo Thukpa, Phumbi etc are the tastes of Kalimpong. If you like to taste the hot refreshing Darjeeling tea then you can get numerous café and restaurant in Kalimpong.
History of Kalimpong Hill Station
Kalimpong is used to be the main trade way center between India and Tibet before China captured Tibet (Sino-Indian war). This trade route still exists, which is known as “Silk Route” but now it is closed. Kalimpong town has the classic history, until the 19 century the Kalimpong was ruled by the Bhutan King and before that Kalimpong was the territory of Sikkim known by the name” Dalingkot”.In 1864 the Anglo- Bhutan war, Bhutan got defeated and the treaty of Sinchula (1865) was signed, where Bhutanese is belong to east Teesta and that was taken by East India Company, during that time Kalimpong was a small hamlet with more than three-four families. After independence, Kalimpong got merged with West Bengal one of the states of India.
What makes you crazy about Kalimpong?
Kalimpong is also famous for various nurseries, where it grows the rarest and exotic flowers like cactus, Orchids, Rose, Gladiolus, Anthurium, and marigold that’s bloom the entire hill with colors and sweet fragrance.
So, apart from flowering plants, the place is best for the animal’s lover. Red Panda, Black Bear, Barking Deer, Clouded Leopard, Royal Bengal Tiger etc are the rare and endangered species found in the Neora Valley National Park situated 32.7 km distance from Kalimpong town. The park is also a paradise for the bird watcher who houses Lemon-rumped Warbler, Hodgson’s Treecreeper, Chestnut-tailed Minla, Satyr Tragopan, Broad-billed Warbler, Blue-fronted Robin, Rusty-bellied Shortwing Yellow-throated Fulvetta, Rufous-throated Wren Babbler, Scarlet Finch and many more.
Kalimpong is well connected with roads and the nearest railway station is NJP (New Jalpaiguri) which is 71.6 km distance and the nearest airport is Bagdogra airport which is about 75.5 km.
The town is blessed by natural beauties and also a paradise for the adventure lover where the place offers the paragliding from the cliff of the Deolo hill, River Rafting in Teesta River, camping, trekking, angling, and more. You can experience both thrills and the amazing culture of the Kalimpong hill station.
Kalimpong is also best for the foodies, where the place serves many street foods, snack and unique foods in which “momo” is the most famous one where most of the people loved to have and even the tourists. Other than that “Thukpa” or Noodles, Churpi, Alo Thukpa. Phumbi and are the delicious and famous food items serve in Kalimpong. You can also get several restaurants serving continental, Chinese, Indian etc.
So, How many tourist places to visit in Kalimpong? Let me give you brief description of tourist places.
The hill is famous for its tremendous height of about 1,700 meters above sea level and one of the popular tourist places in Kalimpong. To reach the hill you need to book a cab from Kalimpong town or you can share a cab, and the time taken is about 25 minutes drive and you can also go for trekking as well. The hill is accompanied by the amazing garden in atop of the hill and from the ridge edges of the hill you can discover a stunning view of Kanchenjunga snow-capped mountain, undulating valleys, villages and on a clear day, you can witness the glance of Mt. Everest.
Hanuman Temple is another tourist place lie just close to Deolo Hill. It is dedicated to Lord Hanuman, dotted with a giant statue of Lord Hanuman in the top of the small hill. The visitor should climb the stairs aside the roads to reach the Temple.
Way back from Hanuman Temple, this is the shortstop destination. The destination offers a huge statue of Lord Buddha with Unique Buddhist architecture dotted in the middle of the small flowering park from where the view is outstanding.
Dr. Graham’s Homes
It is one of the major educational center, situated lower slope of the Deolo Hill. The institution was built by Sir Anderson Grahams in 1900. The main motive of Sir Anderson Grahams is the provide education to the Anglo-Indian student. The institution also houses, Bakery, farmhouse, dairy, hospital, and clothing. The institution is sprawling over an area about 500 acres.
The hill located 3 km away from Kalimpong town and tucked at the height of about 1,402 meters. It offers pristine nature, rolling valley, Teesta River and the Himalayan Ranges. This place is best for the nature lover and one of the famous tourist places in Kalimpong.
Zang Dong Palri Monastery
The monastery is one of the popular tourist places in Kalimpong, settled in the summit of the Durpin Hill. The monastery is the prominent place for the Buddhist religion and was established in 1970 and was consecrated by Dalai Lama in 1976. Monastery has unique architecture, classic paintings; a sculptured wall which is the major attraction of the monastery and top terrace of the monastery presents stunning views of Himalayan ranges and undulating valleys.
The house is perfect to witness the colonial architecture of British and was built by Mr. Morgan in 1930s on the amazing hill station of Kalimpong.later the house was converted into tourists lodge under the administration of West Bengal Development Corporation. The surrounding of the house offers scenic views and amazing vicinity, but beware! Locals called this house as “Haunted House”.
Pine View Nursery
Pine View Nursery is one of the Nurseries in Kalimpong and one of stop point for the Kalimpong Sightseeing. It is the commercial nursery built in 1971 and well known for its exotic collection of Cactus. The Nursery is the 2.5km distance from the Kalimpong main stand and the nursery also offers pristine nature and scenic views.
Lava is about 32 km east from the Kalimpong town, situated at an elevation of about 7,200 feet. The roadway journey of lava is amazing where pine and fir trees welcome the visitors. Lava is becoming famous for the presence of Neora Valley National Park and the breathtaking views of Jelep la views and Reche la passes.
Lolegoan is the small Lepchas Village settled at the height of about 5,500 feet above the sea level is the recently dotted in the tourist spot in Kalimpong. The village is surrounded by Ghupi and Cypress forest, offers the magnificent views of Himalayan ranges and to discover the amazing views of the sunrise over the peaks from the Jhandi Dara is worthy to experience.
Rishyap is a small village, tucked at the height of about 8,100 feet above the sea level is the popular tourist’s destination in Kalimpong. The village offers you the immaculate nature where birds are chirping, dense forest and to view the majestic Kanchenjunga snow peaks. The tourists can also experience the views of the Sikkim, Bhutan and Nepal Mountains from here. At last, the visitors can stay in cozy accommodation in Rishyap enjoying the cultural hospitality.
